DC Street Chic: 14th + Crittenden
Reported by JustinYou should know this person. Lindsay Hart, is the mind behind Bored of Trade and the vintage editor of DC Mini Gallery, who we interviewed last week. Rachel got a great shot of her afterwards. Lindsay lives in Columbia Heights. She thrifted her hat and shirt, her jacket is from Target and her pants are H&M. Her bag is from Urban Outfitters and her shoes are from a random truckstop in North Carolina. You can learn a lot from her.
I am spending all of my money on projects and endeavors right now, so i haven’t been able to update my wardrobe, but i idolize Ann Demeulemeester as a designer. I would gladly wear anything that woman designs. In fact, i would consider selling my soul for her line of shoes and drapey, monotone dresses.
I like to think my style reflects my own freewheeling grungy DIY personality. Honestly, I prefer to focus on dressing the masses and usually overlook my own closet. When I first moved here, I thought all of these ill-fitting suits and terrible business heels and lack of haircuts was like the worst thing EVER, but I came to realize that different people prioritize style differently, and DC happens to be filled with people who’s number one priority is changing the world… which is pretty comforting.
As far as shopping in these parts, I tend the only new clothes I buy are for my day job, really, and if I could afford it, I would forever be shopping at Muleh (drool). The best vintage store in the area is Arlington’s own Eclectic Threads on Washington Blvd. and North Pershing (sorry DC, but until Listopad opens I will continue to be underwhelmed). Overall I think people should focus less on complaining about DC style and actually take a pro-active approach to changing it and supporting its growth (if it bothers them enough). If I were to leave the District with one piece of advice it would be to INTERPRET trends and manipulate them to fit into your own wardrobe. You don’t want to end up looking like the latest Nylon editorial threw up on you.
P.S. Listopad will be opening this summer at 14th + T, above Som Records.
