Fashion Washington Magazine
Reported by Allicia
Aside from the days of Jackie Kennedy, Washington was considered by many the “ugly” city with a lack for style. The stigma about DC fashion has recently changed after Michelle Obama moved to the White House. Various boutiques and vintage shops in Georgetown, Chevy Chase, Chinatown, Tyson’s Corner, 14th Street and Adams Morgan have emerged to offer the district and neighboring MD and VA more shopping variety.
Fashion insiders, the media and public’s interest in Michelle’s style has entertained our curiosity to know what will she wear next. It was inevitable that a new fashion magazine would be launched in Washington, one that would cater to the fashionistas in DC. For the fashion obsessed, the WaPo introduced Fashion Washington in January to highlight DC’s transformation into a fashion forward city.
Do you think style has changed in this town?

I think we’re slowly beginning to see DC transition into a town that can take “fashion risk” and not just after hours or on the weekend. I say this with an eye toward young professionals, not so much the creative/hipster crowd.
Now that we have first family that is “stylish” and a White House staff that too is stylish (i.e. Desiree Rogers WH Social Sec) hopefully that will give young Washingtonian’s in the K Street Corridor and on The Hill license to experiment with fashion.

i think dc has always had the foundations for style, but people were a bit convinced that they shouldn’t care or try to care about it until now. it’s now no longer a “i’m smarter than that” attitude, but an “i have smart style” attitude, and i love that!

I agree with all three of the above statements. The time is now DC! Lets prove to the world that we embody culture, creativity and a tasteful sense of style within our diverse population.
Politics and black suits do not own this town!
