A Better K Street

Greater Greater Washington has a great rundown of the presentation on the K Street Transitway Project. K Street is a mess right now, with local and express lanes, it’s practically a highway cutting through the city. This project will turn it into a truly world-class, multi-modal urban boulevard. In the middle of the street will be separated bus lanes, which would eventually also include streetcar tracks. Option 1 has two transit only lanes, while Option 2 has three transit lanes, for moving buses to pass stopped buses.  Option 2 also includes bike lanes!

Now this project is not finalized, and right now it is being rushed to be considered for the TIGER stimulus grant. Without that funding it would probably be a decade before this gets underway. If it does get funding though, we could be enjoying this boulevard in the very near future!

I believe it is vital that this project includes separated bike lanes aka cycle-tracks. For many people, a separated bike lane would mean the difference between getting on a bike, and NOT. This would set a precedent for future projects. Once DC has an extensive network of separated bike lanes, and other bike facilities, we will see a bike culture more like European cities, like Copenhagen. Cycling would be considered a “normal” form of transportation by the majority, not an adventurous activity where you need special gear and you risk your life every day.

And we will all become super stylish and good looking… :)

  • NO, bike lanes (on K Street). DC should install nice separated bike lanes on I Street (west-bound) and L Street (east-bound).
