Q & A: Lori of Redeem
Reported by ReadysetDC
We had an opportunity to speak with Lori Pakerson of Redeem, a boutique located in Logan Circle. Since opening Redeem’s door in 2006, Lori along with her staff have been offering accessories and clothing to both men and women. Some of the designers showcased in Redeem are also local, including a few items from De*Nada (who we featured on ReadysetDC in July).
A. Tek: How long have you guys been in DC?
Lori: The store opened in October 2006 in MidCity, on 14th and S Streets NW.
A. Tek: Are you a DC native?
Lori: I am a native Washingtonian- born in the city, raised in MD, and have been living in the city proper for many years. Both my dad’s and his dad’s high schools are within a stone’s throw from where I live now, so I feel very rooted here.
J. Young: How did you get started in this industry?
Lori: Outside of working retail in high school for a few months, my start was opening the shop! I just sort of dove in head first.
The rest of the Q & A and the photo gallery after the jump:
J. Young: Why did you decide to open Redeem at this location?
I really love the neighborhood. I wanted to be part of a community that had an artistic, urban vibe, the camaraderie of other interesting independent businesses, and a place where the store would make sense and really add value to the city.
A. Tek: What makes the U Street / 14th Street corridors unique in your opinion?
Lori: I think most anyone who has been in this part of town senses there is something special about it. It’s fun. It feels like a city should; with a nice blend of businesses and residences, of cultures and interests — it really lends to an eclectic mix of people. So many folks really care about this neighborhood- they’re passionate about what goes into it, and want to see it grow while maintaining its own identity.
A. Tek: Have you noticed a transformation in DC style recently? What do you think about the looks you’re seeing on the street?
Lori: I think there’s definitely more of an interest in fashion and style in the city than there has been in the past.
A. Tek: In terms of street style, how well is the local media doing at showcasing DC style?
Lori: I’ve really been enjoying The Washington Post’s “Scene In” video feature by Alexandra Garcia. She captures a certain vibrancy of street style and finds some great personalities.
J. Young: Any advice for those with style trouble?
Lori: I guess it depends on what that means? If you’re feeling like you need a style change, or an update to your look, don’t be intimidated. We get a lot of people in the store who like something on the rack but think they “could never pull it off”, but when they do try it and find that they can, they’re very happily surprised. Find some stylish trusted friends to offer suggestions, (or trusted store associates). Try some things that maybe you normally wouldn’t, and most of all, have fun! Dress is an expression…. It doesn’t have to be complicated or trendy to work.

Not only does this store rock, they move the city dwellers into inspiration. To better dress the
themselves because we actually do it better than va or md and other states close to it.
