Bike Cyclist of the Day: 15th + Q

I said this was going to happen. The southbound, contraflow bike lane is indeed being used to go northbound as well, because cyclists prefer to be separated from moving vehicles. I’m not complaining or condoning it, but at 9′ wide, I think DDOT should consider making this a two-way cycle track…

I read a resident complaint on GGW that the street feels less urban because now the vehicles are parked off the curb, making them more noticeable. I have to differ (ps. I live less than a block from the cycletrack). The street feels much tighter because now there is one less car lane, making it feel less like a suburban highway.

My suggestion to DDOT: Place a short curb to separate the parking from the cycletrack, and paint a two-way arrow on it…

  • agreed, a curb and some other sort of visible barrier (low fence, period posts, etc) should be added to make the lane more visible to drivers. Adding only a low curb could be problematic if drivers do not see it and jump the car over. The two way path would make sense and the width can certainly accommodate.

I also live a couple blocks from here and one issue I’ve noticed is the accumulation of leaves and debris across the lane. In the traditional bike lane this mess is left under the cars, or in a true grade separated cycle track the curb is moved out so its not an issue. Hopefully the DDOT street sweepers can still access the lane if a curb is added.
