Recap: Salon Contra w/ Jenn Figg and Jeffry Cudlin

When she’s not working on huge shows, such as this weekend’s Fixation event, Philippa P.B. Hughes likes to bring her Pink Line fans together in a more personal way (for instance, her own place!). There is brilliance to this aspect of connecting, and the results are almost always surprising. Called Salon Contra, these social mashups are another way DC comes together around art.
More words and photos after the jump:
This Tuesday, we had the pleasure to meet Jenn Figg and Jeffry Cudlin. Project 4 Gallery coordinated with Philippa to bring these two impressive brains together. You may have seen Jenn at Project 4 Gallery (Sublime Landscape). She is also on display at the Arlington Arts center.
Jenn spoke about her approach to art making and thinking. A constant traveler, she presented what she calls “moving sketches” — a series of digital landscapes made with open-source tools and images. She then shared her sculptural pieces and latest projects. Jeffry brought provoking, brainy questions to the room, and Jenn–equipped with a working PhD from Virginia Commonwealth–answered with equal dexterity.
While Philippa posts the salon video, listen to an audio version of her talk. You can also listen to Jeffry’s Q&A (with audience reflections).
Don’t miss the next Salon Contra. We met new faces, reconnected with an artist, spoke with a sculptor, shook hands with an art critic, and chatted with some of our favorite art lovers. These salons are truly outstanding, intergenerational, and– as Philippa would say–beyond expectation.
