Atlas District’s newest gallery, Industry, opens this Saturday with it’s inaugural show “Round the Corner” by international artist Shlomo Harush. The show will feature twenty unique aluminum and stainless steel works, all conceived and manufactured by Harush by hand. We had a chance to preview the works yesterday, while they were setting up.

You may be familiar with the space if you attended Fixation last November. Not much has changed, however the environment changes with sculptural works as opposed to photography. The raw concrete and brick interior serves as a perfect backdrop to the industrial design works that will be showcased here from now on. I visited during the day, but I’m told by Craig Appelbaum, gallery owner, that as the sun sets the shadows and reflections cast by the aluminum and steel artworks are absolutely beautiful.

According to the press release:

“[Harush's] career is noted for his exploration of the physical properties of the material he manipulates, the role and perception of volume, differing ideas and expectations about function and design, and his frequent juxtaposition of probing theoretical intent with whimsy.”

While the works in this show are mostly abstractions to the form of seating, they also include a floor lamp, a television (which loops an animated video of chairs in motion, animated by Harush himself), and last but not least an SUV. Harush has apparently driven the vehicle around New York, where he is based. There were mentions of driving it around DC, but that is not something that can be confirmed here. Go to the opening on Saturday and ask him yourself.

  • how about another tag for the article—trinidad.

the gallery is north of florida avenue, which puts it in my neighborhood. we’re going to claim all the positive things that we can in trinidad, to remind people that the neighborhood is SO MUCH MORE than the shootings that took place last year!

  • IMGoph way to rep Trinidad. That’s the kind of DC pride I’m talking about…no doubt you love DC love your neighborhood.

  • IMGoph:

I definitely see where you’re coming from. I’m usually picky about being specific when it comes to neighborhoods. With this I used Atlas District since it’s on the press release, website etc. I think it makes sense for them wanting to make a unified “arts district”, with the Atlas Theatre, Evolve Arts, etc. Again, I see where you are coming from though.

We do not currently have a comments feed, but that is something we will look into.
