The Electronic Superhighway

The Electronic Superhighway

Nam June Paik’s “The Electronic Superhighway” is one of my favorite works acquired by the Smithsonian Institute American Art Musuem (750 9th Street, NW in Chinatown). As you walk toward the end of the Modern and Contemporary exhibits located at the Lincoln Gallery of the museum, you will notice a huge neon sculpture of the U.S.

Activation 2719: Gallery Closed This Weekend

Reported by Allicia

Sorry, due to the three changes in schedule in the past few weeks the listed open hours of the space have now run into conflict with the selling of the property. The gallery partnership relied on this carefully planned window of time to be able to showcase these artists and their works, and the weather condition of previous weeks has drastically skewed this time-frame. We really do apologize for not being able to honor the open hours listed, as a result this Pop-Up space will be closed this weekend Friday 26th – Saturday 27th.

We will however be open the weekend of Friday 5th and Saturday 6th. We will also be creating another opportunity for you to see these artists and their work. Starting in the weeks following this show we will begin posting listed Open Studio Hours for the associated artists. This will provide you the opportunity to see, and talk to the artists in person. Again we apologize for the inconvenience, hope to see you through next weekend.

Open Hours:
Friday, March 5th (noon – 7pm) + Saturday, March 6th (10 – 5pm)

Show Closing:
Friday, March 12th

Participating Artist:
The participating artists are Tim “Con” Conlon, Decoy, James Walker, Emily Green Liddle, Bryan Rojsuontikul, Drew Gram, Diana Cruz, Aniekan Udofia as well as No Kings Collective themselves Brandon Hill, Francisco Esteban, and Peter Chang.

The upcoming Chinese New Year begins on Sunday, February 14th this year. The District will be celebrating 2010’s Year of the Tiger with two huge events.  One will be held in Chinatown with a traditional dragon dance as a representation of bringing good luck and success for the new year and the other event will provide activities related to China and free tickets to the current exhibition, Terra Cotta Warriors, at the National Geographic museum.

February 6, 2010

National Geographic celebrates Chinese New Year a week early on February 6th at 1600 M St (NW), with free food provided by P.F. Changs china Bistro, film screenings, tennis demonstrations, activities for families, live performances, martial arts demonstrations and free giveaways to preview the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit. 150 free tickets will be given out and raffled, for more information, click here.

  • 1600 M Street, NW, form 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tickets will be given away to the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit around 11 a.m.

February 21, 2010

The annual Chinese New Year festival will be held on February 21st. “The festival takes place in the heart of DC’s Chinatown and it includes an exciting parade, the Chinese Lion and Dragon Dances, as well as a five-story high firecracker that will be ignited at 3:45 p.m. According to the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s website, more than 4,000 red packets with key chain or lucky money will be given away during the parade.”

  • Chinatown – on H Street, NW, between 6th and 8th Streets from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Giant firecracker set-off at 3:45 p.m.

Editor’s Note: If you’re feeling generous during the Chinese New Year, give gifts of money to celebrate the new lunar year to your friends and family by stuffing little red envelopes (representing the color of great joy and celebration) around February 14th. A ritual that many Chinese families have been preserving for centuries.

Reported by Allicia

All Our Noise recently interviewed Sean Gray and Christopher Berry (Fan Death Records) and posted the video below. The video also appeared on City Paper’s Art Desk and generated commentary from many locals:

“D.C. is a shitty place, with shitty bands, and a shitty outlook on life”.

Do you agree/disagree with them? What are your thoughts on the local music scene?

Tweeting to DC’s Hungry Residents

Reported by Allicia

Technology has certainly influenced our lives in ways beyond traditional communication methods. Social networking is no longer for just friends and families to stay in touch with one another but also a great tool for connecting local businesses to their customers. With the rise of new media, many entrepreneurs have started to utilized online social networking websites like Twitter or Facebook to engage with their market.

Last year, street food in major cities across the country experienced a new way to dine out in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco as well as Washington. In DC, food vendors have been located in the bustling intersection of famous buildings, monuments and museums along the National Mall by serving half-smokes, egg rolls, pizza, ice cream to tacos and more.  Food trucks became transit around the District in 2007 and the trend of tweeting food trucks emerged on the Internet last year.

2009 Highlights: Pretty Girls

Reported by Allicia

A memorable date in 2009 was the official release of Wale’s, Attention Deficit, album in November. The album debuted at #21 on the Billboard 200 with 28,319 copies sold in its first week.

My favorite track from Attention Deficit is the third single, a remix of “Pretty Girls”, featuring Gucci Mane and Weensey from the Backyard Band. I think it’s great that Wale incorporates local influences to his music because go-go is one aspect of DC that makes it unique in comparison to other cities.

Scream: Hardcore Punk Returns to U Street

Before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana and became the founding member of The Foo Fighters, he was the drummer of a local (Northern, VA) band called Scream at the age of seventeen. Scream was one of the first bands who were signed by local independent Rock label, Dischord Records, during DC’s hardcore punk scene that emerged inside the capital during the late 1970’s.
