My neighborhood was originally built for the people who worked at the Navy Yard. They’d walk across the 11th Street Bridge to work on ships and weapons. These days I walk across the bridge to get to Barracks Row.

In The Crowd: DC All-Stars vs. Steel City Derby Demons

Reported by Phi
In The Crowd: DC All-Stars vs. Steel City Derby Demons

Last week, my friend suggested we take in some DC Roller Girls action at the DC Armory. She was still riding a Roller Derby-induced high after Netflix delivered ‘Whip It’ to her mailbox. You know, that movie about roller derby starring Juno and directed by that adorable little girl from E.T. I was skeptical at first, because, well, I worked at a skating rink in high school (true story) and was the guy in the referee shirt skating around telling kids to stop making out in dark corners (still true). Although it was noble work, I didn’t exactly want to relive this phase of my life.

oh snap: Dilla Day @ Stussy

James Dewitt Yancey aka J. Dilla was and still is a seminal force in music, not just hip-hop. Attending college at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in the mid-1990’s (I know I’m aging myself here) it was hard not to know who J. Dilla was, especially for the real hip-hop heads and the campus only 30 minutes from Dilla’s hometown of Detroit. Hip-hop today is a shell of it’s former self lacking the real talent, production and most importantly soul of the music that I loved in the mid-90’s.

oh snap: Cupid’s Undie Run

For better or for worse, DC is addicted to losing their pants (see: no pants metro ride, naked biking, elected officials). The latest in a recent string of events that feature local residents baring more than what the Catholic Church would approve of was Cupid’s Undie Run on Capitol Hill.

The concept was simple: strip down to your underwear, slap on some V-day flair, run a 1.75-mile loop around the Capitol building, and drink beer — all for the kids, of course.

The event, headquartered at the Pour House, attracted hundreds of participants and a handful of sponsors to support the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul

Reported by The Couch Sessions
Donnie Simpson’s Video Soul

Last week, local DC legend Donnie Simpson signed off of the airwaves at WPGC-FM, his on-air home for the past 15 years. Last Friday marked an end to his over 30 year career on television and radio. Since I wasn’t born in DC, I never really got to know Donnie on radio, however growing up, Donnie became a childhood idol of mine, as the host of BET television show Video Soul.

Reported by Allicia

The upcoming Chinese New Year begins on Sunday, February 14th this year. The District will be celebrating 2010’s Year of the Tiger with two huge events.  One will be held in Chinatown with a traditional dragon dance as a representation of bringing good luck and success for the new year and the other event will provide activities related to China and free tickets to the current exhibition, Terra Cotta Warriors, at the National Geographic museum.

February 6, 2010

National Geographic celebrates Chinese New Year a week early on February 6th at 1600 M St (NW), with free food provided by P.F. Changs china Bistro, film screenings, tennis demonstrations, activities for families, live performances, martial arts demonstrations and free giveaways to preview the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit. 150 free tickets will be given out and raffled, for more information, click here.

  • 1600 M Street, NW, form 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tickets will be given away to the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit around 11 a.m.

February 21, 2010

The annual Chinese New Year festival will be held on February 21st. “The festival takes place in the heart of DC’s Chinatown and it includes an exciting parade, the Chinese Lion and Dragon Dances, as well as a five-story high firecracker that will be ignited at 3:45 p.m. According to the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s website, more than 4,000 red packets with key chain or lucky money will be given away during the parade.”

  • Chinatown – on H Street, NW, between 6th and 8th Streets from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Giant firecracker set-off at 3:45 p.m.

Editor’s Note: If you’re feeling generous during the Chinese New Year, give gifts of money to celebrate the new lunar year to your friends and family by stuffing little red envelopes (representing the color of great joy and celebration) around February 14th. A ritual that many Chinese families have been preserving for centuries.

Sagmeister at the Corcoran on “Design and Happiness”

Reported by ReadysetDC

All photos by Vincent Gallegos. Words by Brandon Schmittling and Vincent Gallegos.

An eclectic audience gathered at the Corcoran on Monday night to learn how New York-based graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister combines “Design and Happiness”. While he is most well known for his self-promotional pieces and album covers, Sagmeister’s most interesting work may be his lesser-known projects completed during the unusual sabbatical he takes every seven years. He literally closes his Manhattan studio for an entire year in order to focus completely on artistic exploration. And this, among other things, is what makes him happy.

Keeping A Diary

What we learn from Sagmeister is applicable for just about anyone. Happiness has almost nothing to do with external factors such as location, demographic, and social-economic background. Just as humans have an innate ability to adapt to abuse, we can also grow accustomed to pleasure which means we’re not always able to sustain happiness. We have “an immune system for the mind” that needs to be jolted; even with complete control of his own studio, he tells us, things can become boring fairly quickly. (more…)

Tweeting to DC’s Hungry Residents

Reported by Allicia

Technology has certainly influenced our lives in ways beyond traditional communication methods. Social networking is no longer for just friends and families to stay in touch with one another but also a great tool for connecting local businesses to their customers. With the rise of new media, many entrepreneurs have started to utilized online social networking websites like Twitter or Facebook to engage with their market.

Last year, street food in major cities across the country experienced a new way to dine out in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco as well as Washington. In DC, food vendors have been located in the bustling intersection of famous buildings, monuments and museums along the National Mall by serving half-smokes, egg rolls, pizza, ice cream to tacos and more.  Food trucks became transit around the District in 2007 and the trend of tweeting food trucks emerged on the Internet last year.
