Once upon a time, shopping in the nation’s capitol was defined by a plethora of malls in Chevy Chase, Tyson’s Corner and Georgetown. Nothing existed to represent the city’s true and natural style. Little by little, with the help of bold creatives, a new and unique community-connected shopping experience is blooming in DC. The people [...]
A New Artistic Pulse at the Randall School

It has been more than thirty years since the school bells last rang at the Randall School in Southwest DC, but optimism for the future of the historic school is in the air once again. The Corcoran Gallery, the current owners of the Randall School, have found a new purchaser to take over their project. [...]
ReadysetDC Previews: Mixt Greens (17th + K)

(Editor’s Note: Please welcome our newest contributor Gabrielle!)
All photos by Tracy Clayton.
Mixt Greens is an ambitious newcomer to DC’s lunch scene. With two locations already open, and another two on the way, the restaurant offers organic gourmet salads, sandwiches, and soups in an environment that’s, well, very green.
“Our environmental ethic permeates every aspect [...]
Booth’s Redesign of the Metrorail Map
(Click to here for large view)
Last month, graphic designer Cameron Booth took a run at redesigning the iconic DC Metrorail map. Proving that you can always build a better mousetrap, his design attempts to rectify some of the aesthetic issues that Booth calls “amateur,” while giving clarity to some important geographical conditions and providing [...]
The Art of: The House Party

If you’ve read any local blogs within the past few weeks you’ve probably seen the debate over the state of the DC music scene. Local bands, record labels, and shows have all be placed under the limelight.
In lieu of putting in my opinion, I asked Shauna Alexander to document her experience of [...]

Words w/ Erik Bruner-Yang of PASH

Local band Pash has played hundreds of shows, traveled thousands of miles, and worked with some of the District’s greatest local artists. After eight years of touring Pash will be playing it’s final show at Black Cat tonight. I had the pleasure of catching up with guitarist Erik Bruner-Yang to hear some stories of the [...]

My neighborhood was originally built for the people who worked at the Navy Yard. They’d walk across the 11th Street Bridge to work on ships and weapons. These days I walk across the bridge to get to Barracks Row.
Want to know what’s happening across the river in Anacostia? David Garber is [...]
Band Practice w/ U.S. Royalty + Phil Adé

I dropped by Gold Leaf Studios on Tuesday night to chat with the dapper gentlemen of U.S. Royalty (John, Paul, Luke, Jacob) and with DC’s budding hip-hop star, Phil Adé, about their recent collaboration and upcoming show at the Rock and Roll Hotel. They were kind enough to answer a few questions before jumping [...]

Reminders of snomaggeden, snopocalypse, snOMG or whatever you want to call it are still around us. Once white and puffy snow banks are now blocks of ice coated with charcoal grey clogging city streets. Residents have marked their parking spots with garbage cans, chairs, cones or whatever they can find to signal, “hey I shoveled [...]

oh snap: DC Record Fair @ Black Cat

Over 1,400 beat miners, DJ’s and vinyl connoisseurs gathered at the Black Cat this weekend for the 4th DC Record Fair. DJ’s spun records (of course) while folks fingers danced across crates looking for that rare find. The DC Record Fair was brought to you by Som Records, DC Soul Recordings, and of course the The Vinyl District.
