First Look: Agora (Dupont)

Reported by Hillary

It’s a bit of an understatement to say that Dupont Circle is better known for its bars than its Turkish food. But Latif Guler, the owner of the soon-to-open Agora on 17th Street, hopes to change that.

And if anyone can, it’s certainly the owner of the popular bar Jack’s, which closed earlier this year so that Guler, a native of Turkey, could focus on what he loves. “Before, it was more like a bar,” he says. “Burgers, steaks, not a foodie place. Here, I want to educate people. I want them to learn about the food and wine of my country.” (more…)

Grand Opening: Dolcezza in Dupont

Unseasonably cold weather didn’t stop patrons from lining up outside the door of Dolcezza’s new branch in Dupont for the gelateria’s grand opening. Lured in by the promise of free gelato, a line of customers obediently waited outside the doors for their chance to go in and select a free sample. “My wife [Violeta Edelman, [...]

DC Classical: The Cairo

DC Classical: The Cairo

Documenting the beautiful classical architecture of DC.

The one that sparked the DC Height Limit. I love the sculptural details, like the gargoyles and intricate relief at the entrance. From Wikipedia:
The Cairo apartment building, located at 1615 Q Street NW in Washington, D.C., is a landmark in the Dupont Circle neighborhood and the District’s tallest residential [...]

DC Classical: The Brewmaster’s Castle

Documenting the beautiful classical architecture of DC.

This is a new weekly feature that was inspired by a conversation with Dr. Nir Buras. He is the man behind McMillan Two, which calls for narrowing the Anacostia, extending the L’Enfant street grid to both sides of the river and building many more bridges. He is a Classicist, and [...]

A Few Photos + Video of the High Heel Drag Queen Race

The crowd came out in the pouring rain to line up along the street to watch the brave participants race down 17th Street in high heels last night. Not even mother nature could stop the glamorous occasion. Some of the contestants were in full drag and character as they provided entertainment to the eager crowd between 7-9 PM. The favorites of the night included a few iconic divas Julia Child, Cruella De Ville and Marilyn Monroe (with JFK).

Local news station NBC 4 along with a hand full of photographers were out to capture the moment with ReadysetDC. We also spotted Mayor Fenty, Paul Wharton and the CW crew at the race. This is one element of the District that makes our city unique, do you agree?

First Taste: Chipotle’s “Garden Blend” Vegan Burrito

There’s been stirrings since yesterday of a newly introduced vegan menu item at Chipotle in Dupont Circle. Today Justin and I set out to find the truth, and I’m pleased to report our findings:
Chipotle is now offering what they are calling a “Garden Blend” ingredient in their meat area, which is a vegan blend of [...]
